Job Description
Aga Khan University’s (AKU) Department of Community Health Sciences (CHS) is a preeminent public health institution in the country. The vision of the Chancellor set the direction for the University to take a lead in community development and the creation of an innovative curriculum that emphasises a balance between patient care and population health. Over the past several decades, CHS has played a major role in leading the development of national level primary health care, public health practice, health systems through evidence based approach. CHS has established successful models in urban and rural settings in Pakistan emphasising empowerment – building on the strengths of communities. As part of an international university, CHS collaborates in a global network of outstanding research and teaching institutions including AKU affiliates in East Africa and Central Asia.
CHS has five major sections Epidemiology & Biostatistics, Health Policy & Management, Population & Reproductive Health, Environmental-Occupational Health & Injuries, and Non Communicable Diseases & Mental Health.

Responsibilities:
You will be responsible for:
functioning as a central unit for all research activities to enhance the research portfolio of the department
facilitating all sections for grant writing, submission, follow-up and linkages with funding agencies
teaching courses on communicable disease prevention and control to postgraduate students
establishing a research and development office within CHS and providing lead assistance to Chair in developing, documenting and presenting research priorities and themes across sections
overseeing all proposals submitted for ethical review and ensuring implementation of ethical practices in research work
developing proposals for funding especially in the area of communicable diseases focusing on TB, HIV, Malaria and Hepatitis
overseeing the work of Data Management Unit (DMU) by developing a repository of data bases of various research grants within CHS
managing the training and research support functions of DMU by working with IT staff and relevant faculty in CHS
facilitating the research related component for the revamping of new field sites for Public Health Practice and coordinating research related activities in the new rural health program in Thatta district, the urban health program in Karachi, and the two new field sites developed for student training
managing CHS related partnerships within and outside AKU for existing and upcoming grants and leading the effort for developing a strategy of increased resource mobilization
establishing and/or strengthening relationships with partners such as UN agencies, bilateral and multilateral donors and relevant government departments for relevant research activities
overseeing the departmental website, or any other departmental newsletters or communication.

Requirements:
You should have:
a Masters degree in public health, epidemiology, biostatics or equivalent from a well reputed and HEC recognised University/Institution
at least five years experience at a management level position preferably in an educational and research institution with exposure of proposal and grant writing on infectious disease or communicable diseases
knowledge of new research/teaching methodologies and practices and good teaching skills
ability to communicate effectively both verbal and written in English and Urdu (applicable to nationals only), however, command over other local/regional languages would be an advantage
ability to take complex decisions for which there are no set procedures and also lead trouble shooting where required
ability to work across multiple research assignments simultaneously and lead a team of professionals
good academic writing skills
proficiency in the use of related computer software packages
ability to build and promote partnerships across the organisation and beyond
good interpersonal skills and commitment to learning, growth, and self-development.
